Virtual Monday: Safety Harbor City Commission

in news

Closing a portion of Main Street for outdoor dining, extending the city’s “state of emergency,” possibly giving out vouchers to use at local businesses, and other COVID-19-related items should be up for discussion at the Monday Safety Harbor City Commission meeting.

Once again, the 7 p.m. meeting will be virtual, using Zoom technology to protect the health and safety of residents and visitors during this pandemic.

Among the items on the agenda: approving funds to maintain the city-owned Mullet Creek from erosion that threatens a pedestrian bridge at 6th Ave. N and a retention pond on 5th Street, and approving funds to install a 20-ft gazebo at Folly Farms park.

Not on the official agenda but expected to be discussed are proposals from the May 4 meeting from Mayor Joe Ayoub and Commissioner Carlos Diaz to provide some kind of aid to local businesses.

Several cities in the area have closed off streets to vehicle traffic to provide more outside seating for restaurants that have to follow safe-distancing rules and limited inside capacity. Mayor Ayoub has suggested doing this on weekends on a portion of Main Street.

Commissioner Diaz has proposed giving city residents $25 vouchers to be used at local businesses to help spark the sagging economy. Also suggested at the last meeting was giving utility bill discounts to businesses and/or residents.
